The compass is made of deep chocolate brown bakelite.

We assume the material is radium - see article on luminous watch faces at http://elginwatches.org/help/luminous_dials.html

It has the words manufactured into the bottom "The Cox Compass"

The box is covered in crococile or snakeskin patterned grey paper and printed on the top is
"The Cox" COMPASS ____ WHEN COMPASS IS NOT IN USE STAND BOX ON SIDE
There is one corner split in the top half of the box and all corners show wear. The bottom of the box is in good shape.

Instruction leaflet has a split on the fold, but is otherwise excellent cond.
Leaflet comprises 6 paragraphs and starts with these words - "A Luminous Twin Needle Compass, for Military Work"
  1. Description of Compass
  2. Description of Compass Card
  3. How to Set a Bearing
  4. How to Take a Bearing
  5. Special Notes about the luminous dots
  6. Special Notes on how to store compass when not in use
Dimensions 3.25" square x 1" tall.

Any strange colour reflections on the photos are just from the camera glare. The compass is a uniform deep chocolate brown all over.

We assume it is an English WWII item as it came from an English Estate Lot. We are happy to add any info if anyone knows any more of this item's history.

P.S. It works PERFECTLY! For secure posting to anywhere in the world we will unscrew the top and take the needle out and pack it separately - when you receive it just place the needle back squarely on the spindle and it will work PERFECTLY again.

Please feel free to email us with any questions, or ask for larger scans etc
